FULL MOON HIKING IN IDAHO

Despite the soaring temperatures, full moon hikes on campus provide a welcome opportunity to still get out in the heat of summer to enjoy the trail while also experiencing a very special time in the desert.

This last month – June – was the Buck Moon! Known to be one of the smallest of full moons, it’s light still provided ample glow to enjoy a silent walk in the cool of evening. Well…almost silent walk. A rather large pack of coyotes made themselves known in the not-to-far distance, but by now their song is a welcome sound.

It’s the hour or so before darkness arrives in the desert, the golden hour, the gloaming as my dear friend Colleen recently called it. This time is very much a time of magic, when the veil is thinner between places…or so some say. Regardless of how much you may believe in all that stuff, it can’t be denied that the gold light and long shadows create a atmosphere unlike any other as the nighthawks and bats begin to swoop there is a tangible sense of peace, of stillness, that can’t be described.
